In Bengkala, deafness has been passed down for generations, and the village has its very own sign language, Kata Kolok. Many hearing villagers sign too, so deaf people are a natural part of everyday life. There is also a special dance that deaf villagers perform in traditional dress. Go with a deaf guide if you can, and come as a guest, not a spectator: this is people's home.
