About DeafPlaces

Travel, and be met in sign language

DeafPlaces is a map of places where you can use sign language. Made by deaf people, for deaf people.

Our goal

Travel without guessing

Can I order here? Will the guide understand me? Is there a deaf club in town? We want you to know before you go. Then you can spend your trip seeing things and meeting people.

The idea

One map for the whole world, built by deaf people

Ordinary reviews rarely say whether the staff sign. Deaf people know, but that knowledge is scattered across Facebook groups and conversations. We bring it together in one place.

  • Checked by deaf peopleEvery place gets an A, B or C badge: deaf-owned, deaf staff or sign-language friendly. A deaf admin in that country approves it before it goes on the map.
  • Reviews in sign languageShare your experience as text or as a video in your own sign language.
  • Volunteers in every countryEach country has its own deaf admins. We open new countries when people are ready to look after them.

What we stand for

  • Deaf firstDeaf people decide what makes a good deaf place. Not an algorithm.
  • Free for travellersUsing the map costs nothing, and it will stay that way.
  • Your privacyNo tracking cookies and no selling of data.
  • Open to the communityWe plan to make the code open source, so it can live on in the deaf community.
Behind the scenes

Who are we?

We started DeafPlaces in Copenhagen in 2026. The idea is simple: deaf people should be able to see in advance where they can use sign language. We are two deaf people from Denmark, and we hope many more will join us.

Andreas Styltsvig

Founder

Deaf software architect and independent IT consultant in Copenhagen. Among other things he built the Danish Deaf Association's platform for sign-language resources and Smartlinjen, which makes the phone accessible to deaf people. Now he is building DeafPlaces.

Søren Kyu Winkel

Part of the team

Deaf and from Denmark, like Andreas. Søren helps build DeafPlaces and the network of deaf places around the world.

Country admins

Deaf volunteers

They check new places, fix mistakes and keep the map honest in their own country.
